Purchasing a French Bulldog - Rescue and Adoption
In an ideal world, all French Bulldogs would be loved,
cherished and have round the clock room service. But, since we don't
live in an ideal world, sometimes Frenchies need help. That's where
rescue comes in.
Rescue places French Bulldogs, and helps people who need
to place theirs for one reason or another. Even if adoption isn't for
you, you can still help by being a volunteer, or a supporter, or by
purchasing something that supports rescue.
Things to Consider Before Adopting a French Bulldog
- Or Any Other Dog Breed
-
If you have your heart set on a cute young French Bulldog
puppy, be aware that the majority of dogs placed through rescue are
older dogs and adults. You'll miss the 'cute' stage, but you'll usually
miss things like housebreaking, leash training & furniture chewing,
as well. Older dogs will repay you with love and gratitude that more
than make up for their mature status.
-
Sometimes rescue dogs have special needs or considerations.
Some may have health problems, others behavioural issues. A reputable
French Bulldog rescue will make you fully and clearly aware of all
of these, so that you can make an informed decision.
-
Many rescued French Bulldogs need extra time and attention
to help them become acclimated to their new homes. Do you have the
time to spare to make sure they are able to make the transition successfully?
-
Some rescue French Bulldogs need to go to homes where
they will be the only pet in the house. Are you willing to make the
commitment to own only one pet, for the rest of that pet's life?
-
Rescue relies on donations to help French Bulldogs
with special needs. Are you ready and willing to pay an adoption
fee?
-
Some rescue French Bulldogs - many, in fact - are not
able to be shipped. Are you willing to drive if needed to pick your
new dog up?
-
Rescue French Bulldogs will tug at your heart strings,
but they need consistent training and set guidelines to let them
know their place in your home. Are you willing to train your dog
as needed, or to work with a trainer?
If you've answered 'yes' to all or most of the above, then please do
consider adopting a dog from French Bulldog rescue. They will more than
repay you for all of the extra time and love you put into them!
The Plus Side of Adoption:
• Housebroken - Rescued dogs have generally been in a foster home
for a number of days or weeks and are usually housebroken.
• No Puppy Teething - Older dogs have gone through the "teething
stage", (some of them end up in rescue because of the teething stage)
and are content chewing a dog toy or bone.
• What You See Is What You Get - How big will that cute puppy
get? What kind of temperament will she have? These questions can be readily
answered when you adopt an older dog. You can pick a dog that is mellow
or active, large or small, goofy or brilliant. Rescue groups will help
you choose a dog that will fit into your lifestyle.
• Instant Companion - With an older dog you instantly have a companion
that can go everywhere with you. You won't have to wait for your pup
to grow up, and you have the benefit of being able to choose a dog that
suits your needs.
• Bonding With Adopted Dogs - Often times a dog that has been
uprooted from his previous home tends to bond very quickly and deeply
with his new owner.
• A Match Made in Heaven - Choosing the right dog is imperative,
and mismatches often result in a dog being surrendered. Consider that
your dog will live anywhere from 12-17 years - that's a huge commitment!
Rescue groups diligently work to match you with the right dog so that
everyone involved will live happily ever after.
